According to the statement, the annual reviews of Facebook’s security “identified specific threats to Mr Zuckerberg.”. The cost of protecting Zuckerberg and his family jumped last year, the major reason being the COVID-19 travel protocols due to the spread of the pandemic, US election 2020 and “other periods with increased security risk”. Additionally, the costs of hiring and other expenses for the security personnel also saw an uptick.
The $23 million spent by the company on the security of Zuckerberg includes the security of his family, residences, travel etc. For the security personnel and other security-related expenditure, Zuckerberg got an extra $10 million. Base security cost in 2020 went up to $13.4 million, compared to $10.4 million in 2019.
“The compensation, nominating & governance committee believes that these costs are appropriate and necessary in light of the threat landscape and the fact that Mr Zuckerberg has requested to receive only $1 in annual salary and does not receive any bonus payments, equity awards, or other incentive compensation,” adds the statement.
